Create A Healthy Drink

My Plate Tips // Make Better Beverage Choices

Did you know that every system in your body depends on water to function?  On average water makes up 60% of your body weight.  Getting enough water every day is a crucial part of keeping your body healthy and functioning correctly.

Water comes from more then just fluids.  It is estimated that about 20% of our water needs actually come from food.  To stay fully hydrated on a day to day basis we must consume food in addition to drinking liquids.  Foods high in water content promote satiety, a feeling of fullness.  Many fruits and vegetables have a high water content and even meat, bread, and foods from the dairy group contain some water.

The daily recommended fluid intake depends on your age and sex and ranges from 10-15 glasses (8oz/glass) a day.  Females and younger people can stay at the lower end of the range while males should stick to the higher end.  Since foods make up about 20% of fluid requirements, fluid from beverages should be at least 8 glasses daily.

You should make a conscious effort to keep your body hydrated with water being your beverage of choice whenever possible.  ChooseMyPlate.gov has 10 great tips for making better beverage choices.
