It’s National Popcorn Day! As a popcorn lover myself, I’m happy to celebrate. Popcorn is considered a whole grain, and is a great way to fill the grains portion of MyPlate. Three cups of popcorn equals one serving from the grain group.
The trick to keeping popcorn healthy is the method you use to prepare it, and what you decide to put on top of it. Plain air-popped popcorn has only 30 calories per cup and is low in fat. Additionally, it is a good source of complex carbohydrates and fiber.
An air popper makes it super easy to prepare popcorn. If you don’t have an air popper, you can make it on the stovetop. Popcorn.org provides a great video showing you how it is done. While you are there, browse their site for fun and interesting popcorn facts.
To make plain, old air popped popcorn a little more exciting, try one of these popcorn recipes. Enjoy!
