Did you know that nutritious foods help with brain development and improve health? Nutritious foods are important for kids as they grow. Their bodies and brains need the nutrients found in healthy foods. Get Healthy Utah tells us that you can fuel your kids’ future with school meals. Even though schools are closed right now to help stop the spread of Covid-19, Utah schools will still provide school meals on weekdays during the closure period! Are you looking for a convenient and low-cost way to improve your child’s health?  Consider having your child eat school meals.  Research shows that kids who eat school meals eat more fruits and vegetables and have better intake of certain nutrients. Nutritious food, like fruits and vegetables and whole grains, help with brain development and improved health.

What are the National School Meal Programs?

The National School Lunch Program was signed into law in 1946. The program is available to all schools to provide nutritious, low-cost meals to children. The School Breakfast Program started 20 years later, quickly grew, and helps kids start their day off with a balanced breakfast.

What’s in school meals?

School meals must meet specific nutritional standards. Students are served whole grains, low-fat milk, vegetables, and fruits. Students may be served pizza, cereal, or French toast, but they’re not the same products you may find in a regular grocery store. Laws require that these foods be low in fat, sodium, and sugar.

How much does it cost?

The average school lunch costs about $2.50, and breakfast is $1.50. However, students can qualify for meals at low cost or no cost! Check to see if you qualify for a discount on school meals.

How do I support my child’s nutrition in their school?

  • Talk to your child about what is on the menu
  • Visit the school and eat lunch with your child
  • Encourage them to try new things

There are also simple steps schools can do to improve your child’s experience with school meals such as slicing or cutting fruit, having a vegetable of the day, painting the cafeteria, or involving students in naming the menu items. Reach out to your principal or PTA to see how they can best reach students.

How do I sign up?

You may have received an application at the beginning of each school year, but you can sign up at anytime. Contact your school for an application!
