The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics designates March as National Nutrition Month. It is a great time to focus on the basics of a healthy diet and set a few goals to be more healthy. This year’s theme is Celebrate a World of Flavors. Celebrating flavors from cultures around the world is a tasty way to nourish ourselves and appreciate our diversity.
Enjoying differing flavors of the world gives you a chance to learn more about your own food culture as well as those that may be new to you. Familiar ingredients can be presented in new ways and new foods may remind you of things you already know and love. You may also come across ingredients and flavors you’ve never experienced before.
Did you know that Captain Create has been exploring the world searching for his favorite recipe? He’s been around the world in 80 plates! His hot air balloon has taken him to places like South Korea where he tried Bibimbap, Lebanon where he tasted Tabbouleh, Ireland where he made his very own Irish Soda Bread, and many more exciting locations. Visit kidscreateutah.org to read about all his adventures.
As you celebrate a world of flavors, MyPlate suggests enjoying healthful foods from all food groups, and learning how to read nutrition facts labels. That way, no matter the flavors you prefer, you are keeping your plate healthy.
When Captain Create visited Fiji, he learned that Fijian food has both British and Indian influence, which makes up a unique flavor specific to the area. The people of Fiji love to combine their Fijian flavors with tropical fruits, fresh vegetables, and local fish.
Captain Create tasted a delicious recipe when he visited Fiji. It is Two Ingredient Banana Pancakes.
It doesn’t get much easier than that! Two ingredients and you’re set. Add in extras to suit your taste.
How will you celebrate a world of flavors this month? Leave a comment and share recipes you’ve tried.
Enjoy!
